The LaptopLock is a last-resort when your computer gets stolen. The application installs itself deep into your operative system. Then, it gives you several actions that you can set for your computer in the case that it gets stolen. Now, for this application to really work, you need to set up an account on the website. If the computer gets stolen, then you go into your account and change your computers status to "stolen". LaptopLock will constantly run on your computer and will try to reach the servers every time that the computer is connected to the Internet. So once the application sees that the computer has been stolen, it carries out all the actions that you set up. For example, it will gather all the possible information about the Internet connection, it will take pictures if it has a web cam, it will send an e-mail, or it will even run a 3rd party application with custom actions. Paired with an application that could triangulate a physical position using ISP data and a web cam to take pictures of the thief that got your computer, this could be a nice way of sending him to jail. Or, you could take care of your stuff in the first place and avoid this altogether. On the website, it says that the service is free "for now," so I assume that they will start charging for this eventually.
